A38 Willington Bridge Works Begin September 2026
National Highways is starting essential maintenance work on the A38 Willington Bridge this month, with the project expected to continue until summer 2028.
The bridge carries the A5132 Carriers Road over the A38 and requires a range of repairs to ensure its long-term safety and resilience. The planned work includes concrete repairs, renewed waterproofing, repairs to the bridge joint, replacement safety barriers and resurfacing.
The work will be carried out in two phases. Phase 1 will run from September 2026 to August 2027, with two narrow lanes remaining open in both directions on the A38 between the A5121 Claymills junction and the A50 Toyota Interchange. A 40mph speed limit will be in place throughout this period.
Phase 2 is scheduled from September 2027 to June 2028. During this phase, the A38 will be reduced to one lane in each direction through the works, again with a 40mph speed limit. Some overnight closures will also be required during the project.
The A5132 Carriers Road bridge over the A38 is due to close fully between October 2026 and July 2027. The slip roads will remain open, although some lane restrictions will be in place. Access for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders will be maintained.
National Highways has said that carrying out the repairs now should reduce the need for more disruptive closures in the future.
